The educational policy on foreign languages ​​in the primary and secondary stages of the Australian public system (LOTE: Languages ​​Other Than English) is the responsibility of the six states and two territories in which the Australian federation.

The Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE) , issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sports , are official qualifications accrediting levels of competence and command of the Spanish language.

• The Diploma in Spanish Level A1 (Elementary) accredits sufficient linguistic competence to understand and use everyday expressions that are very frequently used anywhere in the Spanish-speaking world, aimed at satisfying immediate needs.
• The Diploma in Spanish Level A2 (Access) certifies sufficient linguistic competence to interact in situations related to areas of experience that are especially relevant for the candidate (basic information about himself and his family, purchases, places of interest, occupations, etc. ).
• The Diploma in Spanish Level B1 (Initial) accredits sufficient linguistic competence to understand and react adequately to the most common situations of daily life and to communicate desires and needs in a basic way.
• The Diploma in Spanish Level B2 (Intermediate) accredits sufficient linguistic competence to function in ordinary situations of daily life, in normal communication circumstances that do not require specialized use of the language.
• The Diploma in Spanish Level C1 (Advanced) accredits sufficient linguistic competence to express yourself clearly and without having to limit what you want to say. The candidate has a good command of a wide lexical repertoire, including idiomatic and colloquial expressions.
• The Diploma of Spanish Level C2 (Superior) accredits the linguistic competence necessary to function in situations that require a high use of the language and a knowledge of the cultural habits that are manifested through it.

The University of Salamanca collaborates with the Cervantes Institute in the elaboration of the exam models and in the evaluation of the tests to obtain the Spanish diplomas.

The Instituto Cervantes also offers online courses through its virtual campus: Aula Virtual Cervantes (AVE), and face-to-face courses for the preparation of the Diplomas in Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE) that it issues on behalf from the Ministry of Education of Spain, and have received accreditation from many Spanish-speaking countries.

It also offers Spanish courses for specific purposes (business, international trade, law, etc.) in its different official centers and associated centers

General requirements

Candidates who wish to take the exams to obtain the Diplomas must meet the following requirements:

• Accredit, at the time of registration, their status as citizens of a country in which the Spanish language is not an official language.
• Citizens of Spanish-speaking countries residing in states where Spanish is not an official language may request registration if they meet at least two of the following conditions:
  • Spanish is not the mother tongue of either of your parents.
  • Spanish is not the first language he learned.
  • Spanish is not the common communication language.
  • You have not studied all or part of your primary or secondary education in Spanish.

The candidates referred to in section 2 above must declare in writing that they meet at least two of the aforementioned conditions.

Once registered, the candidate will not have the right to a refund of the registration fee, unless he communicates his resignation to take the exam at least 30 days before the exam date. If the resignation is made between 30 and 15 days before the exam date, only 50% of the registration fee will be refunded.

The exams consist of five tests, each of which includes different exercises. To obtain the Diplomas, the qualification of "APTO" is required in all the tests in the same examination session.

The amount paid for registration includes the expenses of expedition and delivery of the corresponding Diploma.
