In New Zealand

Foreign languages are mainly studied in secondary schools and offered as electives. The ones with the biggest demand are French and Japanese. Due to the high organizational and curriculum autonomy that schools possess, the number of hours and the level that these ones are studied differs from one school to another.

The Ministry of Education of New Zealand has introduced foreign languages to the curriculum as a new teaching field, and the schools are getting ready to be capable of teaching this subject at the last stage of primary education, where Spanish is the second most popular language preceded by French. Most of the schools have opted to rotate the teaching of different languages in order that students can have an idea of each and every one of them. However, some schools have teachers capable of teaching a specific language, therefore it occupies a significant place in the curriculum.
