This article is focused on the clarified study of cohorts in the Dutch Primary Education (PRIMA), a great scale longitudinal study with data collected in Primary Schools, every two years, among teachers, principals, students and parents. It began in the academic year 1994-95 covering a whole of 800 institutions including primary education as well as special needs provision ones and covering a whole of 62.000 students. This article describes first the design of PRIMA and the research instruments used. Secondly, the attention is focused in the equality issue. According to the social background and ethnic origins, a description of the results of the arithmetic and language tests will be made. The results will be specified according to the different data collection of PRIMA and their evolution will be analysed during the intervention years. In the third part, the article focus in the improvement of quality. It pays attention to another important aspect in PRIMA, the feedback system at school. All participant institutions receive an elaborated feedback system. In such system, the achievements of the students are exposed and compared with those achieved by students included in a representative national list. The results of the tests are specified according with the social background and ethnic origin of the students in order to get a fair comparison.

Resumen

Este artículo se centra en el estudio de cohortes matizado sobre la Educación Primaria holandesa (PRIMA), un estudio longitudinal de gran escala con datos recogidos en centros de Educación Primaria, cada dos años, de profesores, directores, alumnos y padres. Se inició en el curso académico 1994-95 abarcando un total de 800 centros tanto de educación normal como de educación especial y cubriendo una cifra de 62.000 alumnos. Este artículo describe, en una primera parte, el diseño de PRIMA y los instrumentos de investigación utilizados. En la segunda parte del documento, la atención recae en el aspecto de igualdad. Se hará una descripción de los resultados de las pruebas de aritmética y lengua, según el entorno social y el origen étnico. Se especificarán los resultados conforme a las distintas tomas de datos de PRIMA y se analizará su evolución durante los años de intervención. En una tercera parte, el artículo se centra en la mejora de la calidad. Se presta atención a otro aspecto importante de PRIMA, como es el del sistema de feedback en la escuela. Todos los centros participantes reciben un elaborado sistema de feedback. En dicho sistema, los logros de los alumnos se presentan y se comparan con aquellos conseguidos por alumnos incluidos en una muestra nacional representativa. Con objeto de alcanzar una comparación justa, los resultados de las pruebas se especifican de acuerdo con la procedencia social y étnica de los alumnos.
