Abstract

Ten views concerning old age: from a deterioration and deficit approach to a positive one

This article tries to offer a wide view on old age and ageing at present, built from various specific view points, ranging from the more traditional approach, represented by biologic-behaviourist and functionalist views, that offer a negative image for this stage, to the current approaches, like those offered by the Life Cycle Development Perspective, the historical view, or the Critical Gerontology, that propose new ways for the understanding and conception of old age, also creating new perspectives for educational analysis and intervention for this age group. The image of old age as deterioration, as dependence and social rift, as time for productivity and opportunity, or as emancipation and cultural hybridisation is analysed in a more specific way.

Resumen

El artículo trata de ofrecer una imagen amplia sobre la vejez y el envejecimiento en el momento actual, construida a partir de un conjunto de visiones más particulares que van desde los enfoques más tradicionales representados en las visiones biológico-conductual y funcionalista, que ofrecen una imagen negativa sobre esta etapa, hasta visiones más actuales como las que ofrecen la Perspectiva del Desarrollo del Ciclo Vital, la visión historicista o la denominada Gerontología Crítica, que proyectan nuevos modos de entender y conceptuar la vejez, y que abren también nuevas perspectivas de análisis y de intervención educativa para este grupo de edad. De manera más específica, se analiza la imagen de la vejez como deterioro, como dependencia y ruptura social, como tiempo productivo y de oportunidad o como emancipación e hibridación cultural.
