Abstract

Analysis of the time distribution of principals in primary education schools.

This article analyses the real occupation of the principals of Primary Education institutions through the measure of time that they employ in the different non academic tasks, and the relationship between this managing performance with some of the process of running the institution. The conclusion is that most of this time is devoted to administrative and management activities, followed by the activities related with the academic leadership, contacts with parents and self development, a quite generalised situation in the rest of the European Community countries. At the same time, a breakdown of principals has been made, considering time employed, in academic leaders, bureaucratic principals and academic-bureaucratic principals. This typology is distributed in a variable way depending of the size and importance of the school. A relationship between this typology and some of the studied variables of the way of running the institution has been found; such as the subjects discussed in staff meetings, the participation of parents, and the evaluation criteria of the institution, which let us state that the distribution of time is a variable to consider in studies on school effectiveness.

Resumen

En este artículo se analiza la ocupación real de los directivos de centros docentes de primaria a través de la medida del tiempo que emplean éstos en las diferentes tareas no lectivas, y la relación que esta actuación directiva tiene sobre algunos procesos de funcionamiento del centro. Se concluye que la mayoría de este tiempo se dedica a actividades administrativas y de gestión, seguido de las tareas relacionadas con el liderazgo pedagógico, los contactos con los padres y madres y el desarrollo personal, situación bastante generalizada en el resto de países comunitarios. Asimismo se ha obtenido una clasificación de los directivos, en función del empleo del tiempo, en líderes pedagógicos, directivos burocráticos y directivos burocrático-pedagógicos. Esta tipología se distribuye de forma desigual en función del tamaño y la titularidad del centro. Se ha encontrado relación entre esta tipología y algunas de las variables de funcionamiento de centro estudiadas, como los temas tratados en reuniones del claustro, la participación de los padres y madres, y los criterios de evaluación del centro, lo que permite afirmar que la distribución del tiempo es una variable a tener en cuenta en los estudios sobre eficacia escolar.
