Estado de la educación de Tenerife a finales del siglo XVIII

Resumen
En las Islas Canarias no se llevó a cabo la encuesta que dio lugar al Catastro de Ensenada. Por eso las estadísticas escolares de Tenerife son escasas hasta bien entrado el siglo XIX. Hace algunos años Antonio Bethencourt Massieu dio a conocer un informe emitido por el corregidor de La Laguna en 1790 que venía a clarificar en cierto modo la situación escolar de aquella isla a finales del Antiguo Régimen. En el estudio que ahora se presenta, los autores dan cuenta de la existencia del expediente completo que dio lugar a aquel informe, que en alguna medida contraría las tesis del profesor Bethencourt. Se explica cómo se originó el informe, quiénes y cómo informaron, cuál era el contenido educativo de sus dictámenes, y se incorpora la trascripción de la información suministrada por algunos municipios.

Abstract
Education in Tenerife at the End of the XVIII CenturySalto de línea Salto de línea The survey which gave rise to the so-called «Ensenada Cadastre» was not carried out in the Canary Islands. As a result, school statistics in Tenerife were scarce until after the first decades of the XIX century. Some years ago, Antonio Bethencourt Massieu revealed a report issued by the mayor of La Laguna in 1970. Its aim was that of reflecting the current situation of education in that island at the end of the historical period known as the Ancien Régime.Salto de línea In this study the authors present the whole expedient which sparked that report off and which contradicts, somehow, Proffesor Bethencourt's thesis. Besides, they show the facts and reasons which gave rise to the report, the way it was disseminated and the educational contents included in it. On the other hand, the transcription of the information provided by certain municipalities is also contained.
